Attending a wedding can be stressful too! There’s traveling, mingling with people you don’t know, buying the right gift. But there’s nothing more stress-inducing than not knowing what to wear! If you get invited to a wedding with a particular dress code and you’re not certain what it means, here’s a quick guide to help you out.
For the ladies, a summer sundress is appropriate. Wedges or dressy sandals are perfect footwear for a casual wedding, but flip flops and sneakers are not. Men, you can wear dress pants or khaki pants with a collared shirt. You can add a tie or sport jacket if you’d like, but it’s not required. If it’s chilly, feel free to add a sweater, as well. Steer clear of any t-shirts or tennis shoes.
When the dress code on an invitation reads “cocktail attire,” it suggests a dark suit worn with a tie (a navy or charcoal grey suit is best) for men, and a shorter, party-ready dress for women, such as a little black dress or even dressy separates like a skirt and blouse.
A tuxedo or formal dark suit and tie. She should wear: A long evening dress, dressy suit or formal cocktail-length dress.
Black tie is a dress code for social functions that start after 6 p.m., and basically translates to “this party is fancy and men should wear tuxedos. Ladies: A night for you to look your most gorgeous! Embrace it and have fun. Wear a long formal gown or a shorter (but fancy) cocktail dress that is black tie appropriate. Bring out your best jewels and high heels and jazz it up!
Although rarely seen these days, white tie is as formal as dress codes get! Ladies: Bring out your best full length ball gown and jewels. This is as formal as you’re going to get with dress code. Long white gloves are optional, and décolletage or strapless acceptable. Gentlemen: Black dress coat (tail coat) and matching trousers, wing-collared shirt with shirt studs and cufflinks, white piqué waistcoat and white bow tie, black patent-leather or calfskin evening shoes and black silk socks.
And remember, if you’re not sure if what you’re planning to wear is dressy enough, it’s probably not. Upgrade it a notch with some accessories or nice shoes and you’re certain to be just fine!
